Kathy Schroeder’s 5th/6th Students

Sunday school for children at First Alliance has flourished!  Under the direction of the Board of Elders, the Children’s Ministry Committee spent over a year praying for direction in finding and implementing a coordinated and comprehensive curriculum for our Sunday School.  We selected the excellent Child Evangelism Fellowship Bible material, which is thorough and biblically sound.

Our dedicated teachers have spent much time and creativity with our children, ages 4 to 12.  This September we took an exciting 12-week journey with Moses, from his babyhood to his courageous leadership of the Israelites.  We felt Moses’ discouragement, because even when he led God’s people out of Egypt, across the Red Sea, and into the wilderness, they still challenged the Lord and repeatedly disobeyed Him.

This study encouraged each child to trust God and His plan for him, challenging him to obey and worship God.
Exciting stories of plagues, the Passover, manna, idolatry, the bronze serpent and miraculous escapes awed the children and teachers alike.

Classes weekly reviewed the story of Moses, seeing God’s plan and provision.  We memorized Bible verses as well as the Ten Commandments.  Two classed watched the exciting scene from the movie The Ten Commandments’ of the crossing of the Red Sea, with Pharaoh and his army following behind.  Looks of wonder on the children’s faces and comments of “That’s scary!!” helped children understand God’s amazing deeds.  Teachers tell their own stories below.

Nursery Amber Rader

The nursery has some wonderful workers these days.  We can always use more, but we are so thankful for all of our volunteers.  We have such beautiful babies!

Toddler Nursery  Stacey Lehman

Our toddler nursery (for three and four-year-olds) is a very active group.  We like to play, dance to music, and spend lots of time with our new wooden train set.  On a typical Sunday we have anywhere from 3-15 kids.  It’s fun to play musical instruments and march around the room.

Over 20 adults and teens help watch us and tell us Bible stories every month plus, we learn a memory verse each month!  This next quarter we will be learning about Jesus’ birth and will hear stories about His life.

Every Sunday during church time we get a snack; our favorite is cheese crackers.  We always need more helpers who can play with us and watch us, so if anyone is interested, please tell me.  We’d love to have you join us!

Pre-K and Kindergarten Janet Herdman and Melissa McClain

Children ages 4-6 were the youngest class who studied Moses.  We spent several weeks on each major story and reviewed every week.  Helping young children understand some concepts was challenging, but we were thrilled to see what impressed our class and how much they remembered.  Activities such as finding the (pretend) baby, hiding him in a basket in the reeds, acting out God speaking to Moses from the burning bush, and going before Pharaoh with God’s message kept the class enthralled.  At the moment our class is learning the Ten Commandments.  In addition, the children memorize Bible verses regularly. (Earning a candy bar for correct recitation helps motivate!) They are truly living out Psalm 119:11  “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” What a testimony to parents!

First and Second Grade                    Amanda Stanfield and Holly Babcock

We are taking our study of Moses slowly, to grasp how the Lord rescued and protected His people, and to learn that God wants to do the same for us. We spent two weeks discussing how the Passover parallels Christ’s sacrifice on the cross.  The students are using their Bibles each Sunday to look up scriptures and to learn the books of the Bible. They are also learning the Ten Commandments and how to apply them to their lives.

Third and Fourth Grade Linda Sparks, Sharon Buehrer, Autumn Barry, Dick and Gail Graham

The children are memorizing the books of the Old Testament as well as the Ten Commandments. We have fun with games and activities pertaining to our study of Moses such as making bricks, eating manna, and writing hieroglyphics. When we sit down to study the Bible things get very serious. The children are developing a respect and reverence for how awesome our God is. Seeing how He took care of the Israelites encouraging them to trust God with their own lives and plans.

Fifth and Sixth Grades         Kathy Schroeder, Shirley Brelsford, Sheila Price, Lindsay Fagan, Mary Ann Wiley

What a joy to teach the fifth and sixth graders!  They are so full of energy and questions.  Each class begins with prayer requests and a time of prayer before beginning our lesson. It is an honor to be working for the Lord teaching His Word and praying for lost souls.  We have been studying about Moses, from his birth to his wandering in the wilderness.  The class has been interested to learn that the Israelites really were not much different than we are, often learning the hard way. Asking questions, participating in activities related to the lesson, and sometimes playing mind games, keeps us on our toes!
